Core Activities:

The mission of PSI is to measurably improve the health of poor and vulnerable people in the developing world, principally through social marketing of family planning and health products and services, and health communications. Social marketing engages private sector resources and uses private sector techniques to encourage healthy behavior and make markets work for the poor.

Activities in Lesotho:

Peer Education
In January 2006, with the support of the Development Council of Ireland (Irish Aid), PSI/Lesotho began a peer education program, contracting field educators to increase demand for VCT services and promote healthy sexual behavior. Field educators mobilize target groups, educate on HIV information and VCT services, refer more than 650 clients a month to New Start VCT centers and strengthen and support post-test clubs. Through this program PSI/Lesotho has collaborated with The Employment Bureau of Africa (TEBA), Lesotho Defense Force (LDF), commercial sex workers (CSW), village chiefs and traditional leaders.

New Start VCT
PSI launched voluntary counseling and testing services under the New Start brand in 2004. PSI/Lesotho works in partnership with the Ministry of Health to manage a network of VCT centres, which include sites in Butha-Buthe, Maseru, Maputsoe, Mafeteng, and Qachas Nek. These sites provide high quality, confidential VCT services. All sites operate a mobile VCT service which is a critical component of providing access to services for rural populations. PSI/Lesotho creates demand for VCT services through a combination of mass media and interpersonal communications. In 2008 PSI will open three new sites in collaboration with MoHSW and CDC in Mokhotlong, Thaba-Tseka & Quthing.

Condom Social Marketing (CSM)
Under a program funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, PSI/Lesotho markets three male condom brands. PSI/Lesotho also distributes a low cost, high quality workplace condom which is purchased from PSI by employers and distributed to employees free of charge. Since CSM program inception in 2001, using a combination of distribution, marketing and AIDS prevention education strategies, PSI/Lesotho has tripled the number of condoms that are sold and the number of shops where condoms can be purchased.

CAPABLE (Corporate AIDS Programme Aiming for a better Lesotho)
As a way to help businesses fight HIV in the workplace, PSI/Lesotho has developed the CAPABLE program. CAPABLE designs a workplace HIV/AIDS programme to fit the needs of a variety of workplace settings. Programs include some or all of the following components: Peer education, management training, condom supply and distribution, brochures and posters, VCT and training and information sessions.
