Work with the main stakeholders in Lesotho’s textile and garment manufacturing industry i.e. the Lesotho Textile Exporters Association (LTEA); the Lesotho National Development Corporation (LNDC); the Lesotho Ministry of Trade & Industry Co-operatives & Marketing (MTICM); and the trade unions active in Lesotho’s textile & garment manufacturing industry (the Factory & Allied Workers Union (FAWU), and the Lesotho Clothing & Allied Workers Union (LECAWU)). ComMark was instrumental in undertaking the research (and providing finance and other resources) which led to the establishment of the Apparel Lesotho Alliance to Fight Aids (ALAFA) – ALAFA.  ComMark also works with Edun Apparel.

Core Activities:

ComMark works under the development rubric of “Making Markets Work for the Poor” – MM4WP.  ComMark undertakes a range of activities that seek to ensure the economic well being of the country’s textile and apparel firms (employment 1st half 2007 – 46 0000 workers).  ComMark is of the view that if the industry remains viable – that it will almost have an effect in reducing poverty in Lesotho.

Activities in Lesotho:

ComMark provides technical assistance to a range of Lesotho stakeholders involved in the country’s textile and garment manufacturing industry.  Its activities include: assisting with trade policy discussions and negotiations; assisting Lesotho firms to sell more products; working with companies to ensure that they become more productive; working with companies to ensure that they are able to comply with retailer / brand labour compliance codes etc
