Canadian Centre for Prosperity and Autonomy-Lesotho Branch

Core Activities:

The Canadian Centre for Prosperity and Autonomy: Lesotho Branch serves communities in Lesotho through rural integrated development, income generation, and health promotion in addition to developing a respite centre for OVC and school for disabled children.

Projects in Lesotho include:

• Leaf Extract project livelihoods program employing local farmers
• Community Support Agriculture project
• Microfinance of small projects (rural areas priority)

Future Plans:

1. Leaf extract project- will employ 180 people, to grow crops and leaves, to extract oils and to sell/market them. Additional crops grown can be provided to people living with HIV/AIDS as food supplements. Project will target 15 farmers in 5 regions including: Berea, Butha-Buthe, Mokhotlong, Leribe and Maseru districts.
2. Train workers for leaf extract workshop in Leribe, Mokhotlong, Nazareth, Khukhune and others.
3. Expand production and sales of organic vegetables and herbs.
4. Build Live-Your-Life OVC Respite Centre and school for the disabled in Teyateyaneng, Berea District. Centre would serve 25 OVC, providing them with basic needs including psycho-social support and income-generation activities in horticulture and poultry. The Centre would also serve as school for disabled children. Children will plant trees on the Centres premises as well.
5. Build agriculture training centre in Berea, working with 15 farmers in 5 regions. Consider other community projects ex. Rural water supply Berea; youth nutrition/and HIV-AIDS workshops.
6. "Moral Development" and psychosocial support using technique from the virtues project

Funding:

• Project generated funds from leaf extract sales
• Rotary Etobicoke (Toronto, Canada)- training of women and machinery for leaf extraction project
• Nestle- pending support for leaf extraction project.
