Activities in Lesotho:
Beautiful Gate Lesotho is a part of Beautiful Gate Ministries International; however the Lesotho program runs independently. The various programs collaborate as needed for information-sharing purposes, such as sharing of office policies and procedures.
Activity includes:
1. Residential Care: Beautiful Gate can house up to 42 children, between the ages of 0-5 years, in the two houses which make up their residential facility. They currently have 36 residents with 42 of their 60 staff working only in the residential component. Of these residential staff, there are primary caregivers who watch over 5-6 children each, as well as social workers, nurses, and play therapists. The residential care component includes food, shelter, nursing, psycho-social support, and a playschool for children between 2-4 years old. The playschool involves stimulation, language development, singing, games, and activities to encourage creativity.
2. Education/Pre-School: Since August 2007, Beautiful Gate runs a subsidized pre-school for children between 3-5 years old. The school mostly serves needy children from low-income families within the nearby community, which are provided with reduced school fees. The school also serves some residential children, with two residents currently enrolled. The target number of total students is 50; however, in 2007, the school had 54 students, 4 of which graduated at the end of the year. Pre-school staff currently includes 4 teachers and 1 administrator.
3. Health: Basic healthcare services are provided for Beautiful Gate residents. These services include immunizations, nutrition, and primary care. Since there are no doctors on the staff (only nurses), Beautiful Gate refers patients to other facilities such as Queen II Hospital or the Baylor Pediatric Clinic, if necessary. There is currently one full-time nurse on the staff, with plans to hire a second nurse.
Future Plans:
a) Continuation of current activities and receiving of other OVCs where necessary for temporary placement.
b) Introduction of community project to provide skills training for caregivers and orphans to enable income production for their families.
Needs of Organisation:
Orgaizational needs: Most importantly, the organization needs financial , prayer and spiritual support worldwide. The organization can always use more funding to ensure proper care and nutrition of the children. The organization could also use another vehicle for transporting the children to various clinics/hospitals and for the social worker to make follow-ups on various adoption reports.
Training Needs: the carestaff would benefit from continued HIV/Aids training sessions and proper care and nutrition of children training sessions.
Funding:
