Core Activities:
Salvation Army is part of the Christian Church. Its objectives are the advancement of the Christian religion, of education, the relief of poverty, and other charity beneficial to society. The International Emergency Services section of The Salvation Army strives to provide support, training and resources to respond to the needs of those affected by emergencies without discrimination. The Salvation Army operates in more than 100 countries.
Activities in Lesotho :
In Lesotho, the Salvation Army supports food relief activities. In 2002, in partnership with World Food Programme, Salvation Army distributed food to drought - affected people in Butha-Buthe and Mafteneg from 2003-2004. In January 2005, distribution was shifted to Bereaand Leribe. The Salvation Army currently distributes food to over 100,000 people each month.
Salvation Army also provides psycho-social support to orphans & vulnerable children through the following activities:
- Weekly Kids Club Activities, Biannual Teen Camps, House Visits, Counseling, Trainings, Narrative therapy, Experimental learning, Journey of life, Blanket therapy, Clay therapy, Computer literacy classes, and Vegetable gardens.
Kids clubs consist of groups of children engaging in activities to provide peer support, child-to-child counseling, to disseminate information and trainings, and to report cases of abuse. Their main function is to facilitate participation of children in issues affecting them. These clubs are school, church, and community based and run in all villages. In the Maseru/Berea Districts, there are 40+ clubs reaching 1000+ kids. In Butha-Buthe and Leribe, there are 60+ clubs reaching 900+ kids. As of 2007, Salvation Army has partnered with the Prince Mohato Award Program, which empowers youth through lifeskills trainings and challenges and also recognizes childrens achievements in kids clubs. Kids clubs are each managed by its own Children's Committee which makes plans for the club, keeps an attendance register, and reports to club volunteers or support groups.
Teen Camps occur twice per year for 5 days each at 2 sites in the country, which rotate. In 2007, camps occurred in Maseru and Berea. Up to 70 kids attend each camp session. The camps support OVC and encourage trust, team building, and self expression. As of 2008, Teen Camps have discontinued due to funding restraints.
Currently, Salvation Armys key OVC programs are Kids Clubs and lifeskills/income generation trainings including computer literacy, sewing and beadwork, and vegetable gardens.
