Relationships in Lesotho:
We are linked with the Convent of the Holy Name in Leribe (through Sister Veronica the Senior Liason officer) who is interested in supplying groups of girls coming out of Secondary School who will soon take up the Government schemes of needlework/ machine sewing as a school subject. The idea is for our women at Ha Simone to teach sewing skills to these groups of youngsters at Ha Simone (3kms from Leribe) under the new Government Grant system. No arrangements are yet in place. Still in the pipeline.

Core Activities:
The main objective of Linking Lives is to promote education through UK sponsors for children of Primary School age who will continue through to Secondary School. The children who attend school through our members are very poor and their families cannot afford fees, transport or uniforms or books etc. The children themselves write letters in English saying how happy they are to be able to go to school. The letters of appreciation are most rewarding and reassuring. The effect on these children is amazing. It gives them more self confidence and keeps them focused. Other siblings also benefit and they feel that learning is the way to a better future, which in turn gives hope to the whole family.

Secondary objective of Linking Lives is to help relieve financial hardship by providing items which will be used towards various new community projects which will in time become self-funding.
Activities in Lesotho :
CONTAINER AND PRE-SCHOOL NEWS

Through a generous donation by the Head of a Nursery School in Bedfordshire, UK, which was forced to close, equipment from the Pre-school was packed up by members and sent to St Johns Community in Ha Simone in a 20foot container in December 2007 and arrived in Lesotho in January 2008. The container was lifted onto a concrete base to be situated on the edge of the village and has been received by LLA and used as an office.

Many other useful items donated by local people were also included in the container such as clothes, bikes, books, sewing machines, office furniture. It was a difficult logistical operation but it was a huge experience and it will hopefully benefit the whole Community.

For more than two years, LL has been trying to build a pre-school on a site in the village which will benefit many families and children in the area. Local bureaucracy has almost defeated us. Planning and building in Lesotho has to be the headache of the century. But we are almost there. On 5th of February, 2009 the school was opened in a temporary class room until the main building is finished which we hope will be approximately April 2009.

Two firm School-to-School links have been established between UK and Lesotho.

1. Horley Infants School, Surrey is linked with English Medium School in Leribe.
2. St Josephs school in Launceston, Cornwall is linked with Leribe Primary School, which is situated in Ha Simone village.
Children across the world are learning about each other. In UK many children have no conception of real poverty and these links have taken them outside their comfort zone.

SPONSORSHIPS
LL Sponsors from UK are supporting children in Primary school and into Secondary Schools. Family to Family links have been successful and links between pen friends.

SEWING PROJECT
Just starting up again after a break. Ladies are sewing and making clothes to sell.

LINKING LIVES ASSOCIATION in Ha Simone has now been set up in as a Satellite of our charity in UK. Trustees at Ha Simone have pledged to give their time to the Charity and are fully responsible for the success or failure of all future projects through meetings and joint decision making.
There are ten Executive Officers in total six members from Ha Simone and four from Linking Lives UK. Decisions will, in the main, be made by the people in situ but we in UK here do have a part to play in final decision making and have a legal right to intervene.
Future Plans:
THE RIVERBANK PROJECT

A committee of 10 people led by Petros Makibi started work in 2007 to clear the road leading to the Subeng River, where the famous five-toed-fossil trackway of Dinosaur footprints can be seen on the river bed. This is a recognised site for people interested in looking at historic sites of antiquity in Lesotho and our plans have been sanctioned by the local Community Council for development The idea is to set up a Visitors Centre for Tourists run by the Committee for the benefit of the whole community. They want to build several Rondavels so that local crafts can be sold to tourists who come to view the footprints. Already there is interest by tourists who are coming to see the World Cup Football matches in 2010.
In due course the site will be advertised in the Lesotho Tourist brochure for the area. Fundraising for this project is on-going.
