Massive diamond found in Lesotho Massive diamond found in Lesotho

A huge gem stone has been discovered by miners in Lesotho, which could become the largest ever polished round diamond. Weighing 478 carats, it is the 20th largest rough diamond ever found according to Gem Diamonds.

Discovered in the Letseng mine on Septebmer 8th 2008, the unnamed diamond could yield a 150 carat cut stone which could potentially sell for tens of millions of dollars according to Gem Diamonds.

The Letseng mine, where the stone was discovered, is owned by a mining company of which 70% is controlled by Gem Diamonds, and 30% by the Lesotho government. The mine is the worlds highest diamond mine, at an elevation of 3,100m (10,000ft). Letseng is one of the most productive mines in history - four of the world's 20 largest rough diamonds have been found here; including the three largest found this century.

The world's largest diamond is the Cullinan, discovered in South Africa in 1905. It weighed more than 3,100 carats before it was cut into more than one hundred separate gems, many of which are part of the British crown jewels.
