HOPE HIV works in 200 communities across 12 countries in sub-Saharan Africa giving children who have lost their parents to AIDs the chance to build happy, healthy and independent lives. They do not deliver services themselves - rather they work through local partner organisations.
Activities in Lesotho :
HOPEHIV has partnered with the Salvation Army Lesotho since 2005 supporting them to set up community and school based Kids Clubs for OVC with small offices based in Maseru and Butha-Buthe. Over 120 weekly Kids' Clubs have been established in Maseru, Leribe, Butha-Buthe and Berea districts reaching over 3,500 OVC with 375 trained local volunteers. Psycho-social support activities are carried out which help reduce stigma of orphans and use play to educate and counsel bereaved children. Educational materials and home visits also provide additional support. In 2009, refresher training is being carried out for existing volunteers as well as training for older orphans in club leadership and basic computer, gardening, sewing and handicraft skills. Economic empowerment for older orphans wil be a focus later in the year as will the development of child rights traininhg for existing volunteers and OVC.
