Founded by Paul Newman in 1988, Hole in the Wall camps enable children with serious illnesses and life-threatening conditions to experience some of the joy of childhood. Since 2001, the Association of Hole in the Wall Camps has been working with partners in Southern Africa to bring the programme to HIV and AIDS affected children in Namibia, Malawi, Botswana, South African and Lesotho.
Activities in Lesotho :
The Association of Hole in the Wall Camps (AHITWC) partners with Sentebale, the Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation-Lesotho and other local clinics to support the Camp ‘Mamohato Network. The AHITWC provides camp leadership and program consultation for the local staff team. AHITWC also coordinates a Global Staff Exchange programs for Camp ‘Mamohato staff to learn from our other camps and programs around the world, and hosts an annual Network Meeting to bring together staff from these camp programs to learn from one another and share best practices. The Camp ‘Mamohato Network offers multiple one-week residential camps, monthly Teen Club meetings and occasional Caregiver Days, and HIV positive children receive much needed psychosocial support, care and education about living healthy lives with HIV. Children accept their HIV status, gain hope for the future, improve their adherence to life-saving antiretroviral drugs and feel accepted, respected and loved. The AHITWC continues to partner with Sentebale, Baylor, and other local organizations to help support the camp programs and year-round Teen Clubs across Lesotho.
