- to support and empower disabled children, youth, and adults by providing shelter, food, medical support, and vocational training to become productive members of the community
- to provide shelter, food, education and medical support to orphans, disabled, HIV+ and vulnerable children and youth
- to involve disabled and HIV positive community members in livelihood activities towards food security and income generation,
- to reach out through the AIDS Warriors program to villagers in the region to encourage them to know their status, participate in support groups, access and adhere to medications and develop sustainable livelihoods
- to reach out to orphans and vulnerable children in the region, through the operation of a primary school aimed at disabled, chronically ill, single and double orphans
- to involve orphans in the region in household food security programs and when necessary provide emergency food programs
Activities in Lesotho :
- Education: operate primary school subsidizing +/-160 school attendees with uniforms, food, school supplies and books
- Operate secondary school providing scholarships for 30 students, which cover fees, uniforms, supplies and books
- Health: 70 disabled children and 40 project staff/volunteers receive regular medical check-ups at the Phelisanong health clinic; and the 8 resident children who are HIV positive are enrolled for ARV treatment, accessed through the projects regular weekly taxi service to Tsepong Clinic. The health clinic also administers an emergency ambulance fund for critically ill patients
- 1800 support group members attend regular workshops and conferences; these support group members assist in coordinating village testing days in 14 surrounding villages; 6 full time support workers known as Warriors conduct AIDS education, training, treatment support and home visits throughout a catchments area of 10,000 people
- 70 disabled children receive shelter, food, and education through the Phelisanong residence and centre. Older youth receive vocational training and participate in sports programs
- A handicraft cooperative and craft shop employs four workers and trains others in handicraft production; the shop operates on commission sales and provides a livelihood for 4-6 disabled or HIV positive women.
- Food security: a village feeding program provides 3 meals per week to 200 orphans and 30 HIV or TB patients; the feeding program is a platform from which to offer gardening and home food production training and support. Teams of orphans and patients are assisted in creating gardens with seeds, training, and tool inputs
- Agriculture: Phelisanong raises laying chickens and pigs for the nutritional needs of residents and caregivers, along with tending a 400 tree fruit orchard, a 3 hectare vegetable garden and small gardens tended by disabled youth
Future Plans:
- to build permanent family style home residence (s) for disabled children, to increase resident population to 100
- to develop health clinic to offer VCT; to expand and improve social welfare supports to TB and ART patients through health clinic
- to improve educational facilities, especially secondary school building and teachers offices
- to expand agricultural activities to produce food for the needs of the project residents, staff, and volunteers
