Core Activities:
This link aims to foster friendship and understanding between a number of communities in the UK and the remarkable communities in and around The Malealea Valley of Western Lesotho. Education is at the heart of our Link but a very strong theme of sustainable development permeates our work.
Activities in Lesotho :
Environmental Expeditions involving 15 year old school students have visited, worked and facilitated some environmental and developmental projects in the Malealea Valley since 2003. The work undertaken has been organised in close conjunction with The Malealea Development Trust (MDT)and has received generous support from the visionary owners of Malealea Lodge.
Funds raised in the UK are then put to use through direct action working alongside community members.
The work of the 2003 expedition concentrated on the installation of a wind turbine and solar system for the local secondary school, tree planting and assistance with the excavation of a community reservoir.
The 2005 expedition concentrated more on improving the fabric of a number of schools in the community as well as extending the electric supply within the secondary school to include teachers housing.
Further tree planting was undertaken as was some remdial repairs to a nearby erosion scar. Three doctors accompanied the expedition and consultations with Mafeteng Hospital and the community nurse were undertaken to ascertain an understanding of the pressing health issues which could inform future visits.
The 2007 expedition saw two engineers accompany the expedition as our previous findings suggested that many of the medical problems actually have engineering solutions!
Construction work was undertaken to make good a community reservoir, and its associated sediment traps. Extensive tree planting was done and considerable work to extend the electrification within the secondary school saw the library wired and fitted with laptops and the science lab brought into use via electric and some invaluable teacher training. Electricity was also installed into a dormintory building.
The 2009 expedition (which comprised students from 3 Yorkshire Schools and staff and students from Sheffield Hallam University) saw further construction work undertaken on school buildings, thousands of trees planted and restoration of eorosion scars complted and even an audience with His Majesty King Letsie III!
We have worked with several community groups or learning circles. These have been inspired, empowered and facilitated by the remarkable Dr Gillian Attwood of the University of Witwatersrand and work along side three generations of highly motivated community members is a huge priviledge and one extremely powerful experience for a fifteen year old learner!

Future Plans:
We are working closely with Face Africa (www.faceafrica.com) to facilitate meaningful long term partnerships for communities in the UK wishing to link with those in southern Africa.
The work of Khokanyana - Phiri will strengthen in 2010 with greater capacity and a strong link with the Co-operative movement. A 2010 fundraising calendar is available via www.malealea.org.uk
