Core Activities:
In 1979 Lesotho Save the Children was registered as an independent local NGO, having first existed as a project of Save the Children Fund UK.
Lesotho Save the Children works to protect and support the country's most vulnerable children. Programmes are adapted to reflect the issues children face at different times. In the early years the main focus was on medical and educational support to children with minor to severe physical disabilities and later expanded to visual impairment and orphans.
Development of residential facilities and vocational skills training for children and youth with disabilities followed at Tholoana' Lerato in Masite. Later programmes developed to respond to educational needs of children from extremely poor families unable to afford education. LSC's work changes according to need and currently focuses on child protection, hospice care, education, community and school based HIV/AIDS support.

Activities in Lesotho :
Lesotho Save the Children operates the following projects:
Maseru Children's Village:
In partnership with Habitat for Humanity, LSC is building houses for families of children who were residents of Maseru Children's Village, and had been reunified with a family who does not have enough or any accommodation.
Orphaned and Vulnerable Project in the fight against HIV/AIDS and Poverty Reduction (OVCP):
This project focuses on the remote underdeveloped areas of Mokhotlong and Phamong Mohale's Hoek districts in the following valleys: Moremoholo, Khubelu, Senqu, Qabane, Motsekuoa and ha 'Matsa. The projects aim is to raise awareness of children's rights, gender issues, HIV/AIDS management and promote small income generating projects to enhance rural livelihoods in the context of the current poverty and HIV/AIDS. Training in soap making, herbal medicines, candles, shoes, communal garden and literacy teaching for shepherds is part of the project. Psychosocial support is given to OVC. All activities are funded by Irish Aid.
Ambassadors Girls Scholarship Programme (AGSP):
The Africa Education initiative (AEI) is designed to improve education opportunities for Africa's children, including support of girls' education under the AGSP. USAID / AFR / SD / and ED are responsible for the implementation of AEI and overseeing implementation of AGSP. Winrock International has been awarded the contract from USAID to implement the programme in 15 countries including Lesotho, and LSC has a contract with Winrock International. The AGSP supports scholarships for the retention of girls who otherwise would not be able to stay at school From 2008 AGSP has included boys education as well as literacy programmes for shepherds.
Tholoana' Lerato Training Project (TLTP):
This project trains adolescents in life skills including gardening, piggery, poultry, dairy cattle and seedling production and nursery. The aim of TLTP is to provide an alternative to academic education which children might have missed at an early age. LSC has made efforts to revive TLTP not just to train OVC but as an income generating and food production branch of LSC. This income generation division was initiated with the support of World Vision Lesotho in July 2005. The piggery and poultry project were then started. So far, the project has managed to construct 12 pigsties and cages with the capacity to hold 600 layers.
Child Help Line Lesotho:
This is aimed to protect the children of Lesotho from al forms of abuse, violence, exploitation and neglect in order to promote a culture or respecting the rights of every child. This project works with the support of UNICEF.
