CCJP was founded as a national agency of the Lesotho Catholic Bishops Conference (LCBC). CCJP is mandated to promote and foster research, education, advocacy and action on social justice, peace and human rights, integrating them into the lives of the Catholics and Basotho at large and thus provides a credible voice on such matters.

Justice and Peace strives to build local community organisation and capacity for effective participation in democratic social transformation at the local diocese, national and international levels. Its goal, therefore, is to build people who are informed, confident, skilled, reflective, and committed to advocacy for a better society, so that Jesus intent may be fulfilled: “I have come so that they may have life and have it to the full.” (John 10:10).

CCJP's main program areas in Lesothoare currently:

1.OVC: Child Protection
This program includes child rights education and community sensitization on rights of OVC. They link OVC to the Master of the High Court and other service providers, as needed. CCJP protects OVC from property grabbing and helps advocate OVC enrollment in schools. This program works in 3 districts: Mohales Hoek, Thaba-Tseka, and Maseru.

2. Gender: Women and Men Empowerment and Sensitisation
This program involves human rights education on conflict management provided to men and women in the community. This information is disseminated via members of three community-based Justice and Peace groups in Qacha's Nek who are trained by CCJP. The program also includes training on how to address domestic and gender-based violence and how to provide restorative justice. Through a legal officer on staff, CCJP also provides advocacy on changes in legislation that impact women.

3. Governance and Advocacy
CCJP works with CBOs to strengthen capacity to engage with local government. They also provide direct training to local counselors and government staff in democratic processes. The program currently runs in Butha-Buthe, Mokhotlong, and Thaba-Tseka.

4. Conflict Management
This program seeks to resolve conflicts between chiefs and community councils using the dialogue approach in which all parties are brought together to discuss their problems with a CCJP-appointed mediator. This program is based in Mafeteng and also addresses unheard grievances of employees and communities surrounding the Kolo Diamond Minery.

5.Trade Justice
CCJP is a member of the Lesotho Economic Justice Network which strives for equitable distribution of wealth. CCJP advocates to government, EU, and other relevant bodies on behalf of this cause. They use their own collected data (such as the recent Basic Needs Survey) to illustrate the need to subsidize food and basic items or to increase the current minimum wage. CCJP trains farmers and entrepreneurs on trade law and policies. They disseminate this message via radio spots and quarterly newsletters, among other means.

6. Parliamentary Liaison Program
This component involves following discussions in the Parliament and sharing information with the church community. CCJP also presents submissions and provides input to the Parliament regularly.

Future plans include:

• Conducting public hearings under the Parliamentary Liaison Program
• Expanding Child Protection Program to Lebakeng and Hamarakabei
• Organising civil society forums in southern districts
• Training conflict managers within communities to serve under the Conflict Manager Program
