CARE International UK was founded and began activities in May 1985. It is part of the CARE International confederation, one of the largest relief and development organisations in the world, operational through CARE Country Offices in over 60 countries, including Lesotho and South Africa. CARE works in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe, implementing projects often in partnership with local civil society organisations in the areas of:
  • Healthcare (including HIV/AIDS)
  • Reproductive health
  • Water and sanitation
  • Food
  • Agriculture and the environment
  • Micro-finance and business training
  • Urban poverty
  • Basic and girl’s education
  • Emergency relief and rehabilitation


CARE International UK provides management, financial, and technical support to these projects, particularly in the following thematic areas:
  • Urban governance
  • Conflict sensitivity
  • Private sector partnership


CARE International UK has specific staff responsible for the mainstreaming of Civil Society, HIV/AIDS and Rights in CARE’s programming.
Activities in Lesotho :
CARE has been operating in Lesotho since 1968 and South Africa since 1994. The joint mission of CARE South Africa-Lesotho was created in 2001 to promote regional and cost-effective programming.
