UNICEF photography and film project highlights HIV plight in Lesotho

With World AIDS Day on Saturday 1st December 2007, UNICEF UK is launching a powerful project to raise HIV and AIDS awareness. One of the worlds leading contemporary photojournalists, Gideon Mendel, has launched a project with UNICEF called 'Lesotho Voices'. Mendel has photographed the effects of HIV and AIDS around the world, and is now depicting the lives of seven HIV positive women in Lesotho.

'Lesotho Voices' aims to raise awareness of UNICEF UK's Born Free from HIV campaign, which focuses on preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV. This is a vast problem in Lesotho where only 20 per cent of HIV positive women can access services to prevent their babies being born with HIV.
