24 October, Maseru: The United Nations Day, on 24th October, was celebrated at the Lesotho Sun in Maseru.
UN Day has been celebrated since 1948 and was attended by Cabinet Ministers and the Acting UN Resident Coordinator, amongst others.
The Acting Minister of Finance and Development Planning spoke at the ceremony about how the UN relationship and commitment in Lesotho contributes significantly in attaining the country's Millennium Development Goals.
Mr. Semano Sekatle said that the UN supported the formulation and implementation of the National Action Plan on Women and Girls in the country, in preparation of the Vision 2020 document and the Poverty Reduction Strategy.
The minister expressed hope that though the HIV/AIDS pandemic threatens the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals, the country will overcome the challenge through UN technical and medical support.
The Acting UN Resident Coordinator and WHO Representative, Dr Angela Bensons, said that the commemoration reaffirmed the UN systems commitment to continue working with the government of Lesotho.
Dr Benson declared that the newly signed UN Development Assistance Framework for 2008-2012 will help set the stage for preparation of new UN country programmes and projects in Lesotho.
