Department of Social Welfare: Adoption
In June 2007, adoptions were suspended in Lesotho.
In November 2008, the suspension of adoptions was lifted.
A commission reported back to the MOHSW with both short term and long term goals for adoptions.
Short Term Goals: adoption cases pending at the time of suspension should be given priority.
Long Term Goals:
- The Child Welfare Bill (waiting to be passed since 2004) has specific foster care and adoption policies.

The 1st of December, World AIDS Day, is the day when individuals and organisations from around the world come together to bring attention to the global AIDS epidemic. 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day.
18,000 people died from AIDS in 2007 in Lesotho, and more than 20% of the population are HIV positive. The country is also struggling to cope with 110,000 AIDS orphans. Crippling poverty combined with AIDS in Lesotho has caused average life expectancy to drop to 44 years for women and 39 for men.

24 October, Maseru: The United Nations Day, on 24th October, was celebrated at the Lesotho Sun in Maseru.
UN Day has been celebrated since 1948 and was attended by Cabinet Ministers and the Acting UN Resident Coordinator, amongst others.
The Acting Minister of Finance and Development Planning spoke at the ceremony about how the UN relationship and commitment in Lesotho contributes significantly in attaining the country’s Millennium Development Goals.

A huge gem stone has been discovered by miners in Lesotho, which could become the largest ever polished round diamond. Weighing 478 carats, it is the 20th largest rough diamond ever found according to Gem Diamonds.
Discovered in the Letseng mine on Septebmer 8th 2008, the unnamed diamond could yield a 150 carat cut stone which could potentially sell for tens of millions of dollars according to Gem Diamonds.
